Fuel System Technical Summary

The Volvo D13 fuel system is divided into two distinct circuits: the low-pressure system and the high-pressure system.

Low

The low-pressure circuit is responsible for drawing fuel from the tanks and delivering it to the cylinder head gallery.

Primary Components: Includes the fuel pump, fuel filter housing, AHI (Aftertreatment Hydrocarbon Injector) module, and the fuel gallery in the cylinder head.

Fuel Delivery: Low-pressure fuel flows through the gallery directly to the injectors.

Filtration: The fuel filter housing, located on the left side of the engine, can contain one or two filters depending on whether the vehicle has a frame-mounted water separator.


High-Pressure System (Common Rail)

This system stores and manages the fuel used for combustion.

The Common Rail: Stores high-pressure fuel and is connected to all six injectors via high-pressure pipes.Dual-Function Injectors: The engine uses six injectors—three pumping injectors and three non-pumping injectors.Pumping Injectors: These use the mechanical action of the camshaft and rocker arms to generate pressure for the common rail.

Non-Pumping Injectors: These focus solely on the injection of fuel into the cylinders.

Pressure Relief: Some engines feature an electronically controlled pressure relief valve (ePRV) on the rail, though most vehicles built after February 1, 2020, are no longer equipped with this valve.


Electronic Control and Sensors

The Engine Control Module (ECM) acts as the brain of the system.

ECM Monitoring: The ECM continuously monitors the rail pressure sensor, the AHI fuel pressure sensor, and (on newer models) the supply fuel pressure sensor.

Operational Control: The ECM manages injection for all six injectors and regulates rail pressure primarily by controlling the three pumping injectors.

Filter Notification: On vehicles built after January 1, 2020, a dedicated supply pressure sensor alerts the driver via the instrument cluster if a fuel filter is restricted or clogged.

Tandem Pump: The fuel pump is integrated into a tandem pump assembly.

Drive System: This assembly is driven directly by the engine transmission.
